Trainining for waste segregation!

18/10/2019

Managing tonnes of waste generated daily in the urban areas has become a Herculean task. Changing old habits with sustained awareness and education campaigns through electronic and print media in urban and rural areas, markets and schools can stem the rot. More importantly, sweepers in a sector should mandatorily be educated by rotation. The whole exercise goes for a six when the segregated stuff gets mixed up by handlers engaged by the MC. Mass movement starting from the point of generation and not hefty fines is the answer.

To woo the voters of Haryana, the ruling party has left nothing to chance and made the election an event. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah highlighted the national issues in their rallies. But the recession in the Indian economy is a reality not accepted by them. It needs proper diagnosis to create a conducive climate and work culture with honesty of purpose. The government and the market should satisfy the essential needs of people, create employment opportunities and be utilitarian through policy framework.

Despite the tall claims of development, the city is still a victim of neglect of the civic authorities as manholes and drains in several parts of the city are lying uncovered or damaged, thus posing a serious risk to commuters. While over two dozen of such spots are visible in the NIT area, one such manhole was found lying open adjacent to the Bata flyover on the national highway recently. Though complaints are filed, no immediate action is taken to redress the grievance, which exposes the claims of the Municipal Corporation and its officials. Besides, several drains are not only lying uncovered, but have been choked with waste in many parts of the city.

For the last three years, the road from Agrasen Chowk to the university in Kurukshetra is in a pitiable condition. I visit the university for my study and other work. The road is in such a poor condition that it is difficult to even walk. There is a lot of dust and huge potholes on the road. I hope whoever comes to power addresses the issue.
